Stella Young took time out of her day to make you feel special, broadcaster Waleed Aly has told the memorial service for the late comedian and disability activist.

The memorial service is underway at the Melbourne Town Hall to pay tribute to Young, who passed away suddenly on December 6.

"In spite of the fact that she was better than you in every way, my memory of her was that she would take a moment out of her life, out of the blue, to tell you how great you were," Mr Aly said.

Former disability discrimination commissioner Graeme Innes also said Ms Young would be missed, but that wouldn't be enough for her.

"You will want us to continue the work that you did and, Stella, I pledge that today," he said.
Young's colleague and producer of her comedy show Tales from the Crip, Nelly Thomas, said Stella was a beautiful and true friend, one of a kind.

"We've lost a giant, a pocket-size giant. One who filled every room she was in," she said.

"If you can't see the hole the size of Uluru one little cripple in red high heels and black leather pants has left behind then you should not be seen and you should not be listened to."

Friend Bryce Ives said Stella set the example for not only "crips" but able bodied people too.

"Stella got proud and practised every day," he said.

"We need to get proud."
Songstress Clare Bowditch performed a song, Are You Ready Yet, that she penned in honour of Young.

At the conclusion of the public memorial service, attendees gathered at Melbourne's Federation Square to take part in one of Young's favourite pastimes - dancing.
Young, 32, was the outspoken editor of the ABC's Ramp Up website.

Born in Stawell, in western Victoria in 1982, Young was an activist on issues including disability, gender equality and education.

She was a member of the Victorian Disability Advisory Council, the Ministerial Advisory Council for the Department of Victorian Communities as well as Women With Disabilities Victoria.

She also won the Best Newcomer Award at the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival for her show Tales from the Crip and was set to tour Australia and take her act to London next year.
