Commonwealth Day 8: Aussie men win first ever beach volleyball gold

A vociferous crowd at Coolangatta Beach watched Australia compete for two gold medals on day eight of the Commonwealth Games.

There was controversy and drama on day eight of the Commonwealth Games as Australia won a further six gold.

Beach Volleyball

Australian pair Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann triumphed on the sand to hand Australia the first ever Commonwealth Games men's Beach Volleyball gold.

Coolangatta beach was electric as McHugh and Schumann winning the first set, before dropping the second.

But the Australians emerged victorious 18-16 to celebrate in front of a delighted crowd.

The women's final was a hard fought battle but the Canadian pair of Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes posted a 2-0 victory over Aussies Mariafe Artacho Del Solar and Taliqua Clancy.

Athletics

Australian pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall has turned his mettle into gold on another dominant day for the host nation at the Commonwealth Games.

Marschall showed nerves of steel to win the pole vault gold medal on Thursday night with his final attempt at the golden height.

Marschall's feats came as Australia collected a further six golds for the day to extend its dominance of the Gold Coast Games.

Australia now has 63 gold medals - next-best is England on 28. The hosts have also collected 46 silvers and 47 bronze medals.

Marschall, discus thrower Dani Stevens, 10m platform diver Melissa Wu and men's beach volleyball pair Chris McHugh and Damien Schumann all captured gold medals on Thursday.

And Australian lawn bowlers struck gold on the green with Rebecca van Asch, Natasha Scott and Carla Krizanic winning the women's triples and para bowlers Ken Hanson, Josh Thornton and Tony Bonnell victorious in the B6/B7/B8 final.

Meanwhile, English sprinter Zharnel Hughes was disqualified after winning the men's 200m final, for making contact with Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards, who was awarded the gold.

Mountain Bike Trails

New Zealand mountain bike rider Samuel Gaze won the men's cross country race in dramatic fashion after he punctured his tyre on the last lap.

In the women's race, England's Annie Last and Evie Richards finished first and second respectively.

English sprinter Zharnel Hughes is disqualified after winning the men's 200m final, for making contact with Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards, who was awarded the gold.
