Company wants to speed up injury recovery

The developer of a product that could help aid athletes' recovery from injury is seeking to raise $18 million and list on the local share market.

Body movement monitor developer dorsaVi says it can help injured elite athletes return to the field faster and with more confidence.

The company has developed a wireless, wearable movement sensor system that can be used by sports clubs to assess injured players.

Five AFL clubs, Cricket Australia and English Premier League giant Manchester United are among the sporting clubs and organisations already using the system.

"If you're coming back from an injury, it gives the athlete and the doctors a good insight as to whether that athlete is ready to play or not," dorsaVi chief executive Andrew Ronchi said on Thursday.

"It allows better decision making based on objective data rather than ego and emotions.

"You can stop the athlete from playing if they're not ready, but you can also tune their rehabilitation and get more efficient recovery."

dorsaVi is seeking to raise $18 million by listing on the Australian share market in mid-December.

It will use the funds to help market its product in Australia, the United States and Europe.

Mr Ronchi said the biggest market for the monitoring system over the long term is physiotherapy clinics in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Aside from its sports applications, the system can also be used in occupational health and safety to improve work practices and workplace design, and in medical and physiotherapy settings to assess and treat lower back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions.

The system uses movement and muscle activity sensors that are placed on the body.

The sensors relay information to a small recording device that can sit in a person's pocket or be strapped to the arm.

The system could also be programmed to warn the wearer should they perform a movement that they were trying to avoid.
