Computershare impacted by market falls

Investor services firm Computershare says it is seeing signs of softening operating conditions.

Shares in investor services company Computershare have fallen seven per cent after it warned of softening operating conditions.

The manager of share registers and employee equity plans said falling share markets were driving weaker transactional activity, particularly among its energy and mining clients.

A strengthening US dollar is also impacting its financial performance.

Computershare's underlying net profit in the six months to December 31 fell 10.5 per cent from a year earlier to $144 million, and that fall was 6.4 per cent when the impact of exchange rates is excluded.

Computershare's half year net profit soared to $84.3 million, mainly due to a $109.5 million writedown on one of its businesses in the previous corresponding period's profit of $15.5 million.

While the company has warned of a potential revenue downturn, it still expects its full year underlying business performance to be broadly similar with the previous year's.

Shares in Computershare were down 73 cents, or seven per cent, at $9.68 at 1215 AEDT.
