Travelling con men are targeting elderly Melbourne residents posing as doorknocking tradesmen.

In the latest incident, two men drove a woman to the bank to get cash to pay for bogus repair work in Carnegie on Saturday morning, police say.

Earlier, fake repairmen climbed onto the roof of an elderly woman's home in the same suburb and began smashing tiles.

Other reports have been recently received of alleged tradesmen doorknocking in the Ringwood, Stonnington, Boroondara and Frankston areas offering roof and guttering work.

In some cases they have produced business flyers then offer reduced rates if paid in cash or cheques made out to cash.

It's believed some of the scammers spoke with an Irish accent.

"These men are purposefully targeting the vulnerable and elderly members of the community and ripping them off," Glen Eira Detective Sergeant Gerry Richardson said on Saturday.
