Public hearings into the impact on journalists arising from changes to the ASIO Act have begun in Canberra.

The acting independent national security legislation monitor, Roger Gyles, is considering how a new section of the national security legislation could affect the work of the media and others involved in debates of public interest.

There's concern the creation of new offences for information disclosure are not accompanied by adequate public interest protections, and will stifle press freedoms in Australia.

Human Rights Watch is among the agencies to make a submission to the review, and was represented at today's hearing by barrister Laura Thomas.

She spoke with Kristina Kukolja.
