Asylum seekers held in detention on Christmas Island and who need specialised medical care, are temporarily relocated to Australia to recieve treatment.

They may spend weeks or months in a detention centre on the mainland but are then transferred back to Christmas Island.

Professor Elizabeth Elliott is a paediatrician at Sydney's Westmead Children's Hospital and she's raised concerns about the medical needs of those on the island.

She recently visited Christmas Island with Human Rights Commission President Gillian Triggs.

She's speaking here with Jessica Minshall.
