Concerns over education of asylum-seeker children

There are concerns for the education of more than 230 asylum seeker children on Christmas Island after reports they may not be able to attend the local school.

Enrolling the children would almost double the local school population and reports indicate the island could not accommodate a corresponding boost in teacher numbers.

It's believed the government is instead preparing to hire workers qualified in teaching English as a Second Language who would give the children lessons at, or near, the detention centre.

Thea Cowie spoke with Children Out of Immigration Detention spokeswoman, Sophie Peer, who says the reports are worrying.
