Confidence up on better economic outlook

Consumer confidence was buoyed last week by pleasing jobs figures which sent a positive signal about economic conditions.

Consumer confidence has received a boost driven by a more positive outlook about the economy, especially the jobs market.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index rose 2.1 per cent last week, more than making up for the 1.2 per cent drop the previous week.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said the upbeat result was largely due to a pick up in the economic outlook, after a surprise fall in the unemployment rate.

"The bounce in employment numbers and the fall in the unemployment rate seems to have sent a positive signal, which is being reflected in consumers' view towards future financial and economic conditions," he said.
