An international aid group has called for urgent humanitarian action to improve conditions for people in war-torn northern Mali.

It comes as more than 12,000 United Nations peace keepers took over security duties from African and French troops who have been fighting opposition groups there since January.

The International Committee for the Red Cross has welcomed the deployment of UN troops to Mali.

Spokesman Valery Mbaoh Nana told Zara Zaher aid distribution has been hampered by the unstable security situation in the country.
