There's still confusion surrounding the identity of a man claiming to be a Torres Strait Islander who was detained by immigration authorities in Western Australia.

39-year-old Eddie David, who has been held in Yongah Hill immigration detention centre since Friday, claims he is a Torres Strait Islander with an Australian passport.

The Immigration Department strongly rejects this, saying they have used fingerprint and facial recognition analysis and have found the man to be a Fijian national.

WA correspondent Ryan Emery has been following developments and spoke to Brianna Roberts.
