A $50 million wind farm to be built in northwest Victoria will boast the biggest turbines in Australia, with a rotor diameter of 117 metres.

Each of the six Danish-designed wind turbines will generate around 13,000 MWhs (megawatt hours) of electricity each year.

The wind farm will supply power to Canberra as part of the ACT's Climate Change Action Plan.

The plan requires the ACT to source 90 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020.

The wind farm will generate enough power to supply 12,000 homes.

Construction of the wind farm, which will create 70 jobs, is expected to be completed early next year.

Japan's Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation has provided much of the financing for the wind farm and will own a stake of 80 per cent.

Windlab chief executive Roger Price said the Coonooer Bridge project will be the first of around 35 wind energy projects expected to be built in Australia by 2020.

"Coonooer Bridge is just the beginning," Mr Price said on Friday.

"This is the first project awarded a 20-year feed-in tariff by the ACT government for the supply of renewable energy to enter construction."
