Consumer boss leads grocery code review

The Turnbull government has hired former ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel to look into the operation of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.

Former consumer watchdog Professor Graeme Samuel will head a review into the rules which set out how supermarket giants deal with suppliers and farmers.

Prof Samuel has been given six months to consult over possible changes to the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.

The code was introduced in 2015 to stamp out abuses of market power, but there is debate around whether it should be mandatory, instead of voluntary, and backed up by civil penalties.
