Convicted terrorists to be detained longer

The federal government says it will bring in "preventative detention" for high risk convicted terrorists who've served their sentences.

The federal government has vowed to fast-track moves to detain convicted terrorists beyond their sentences if they don't renounce their extremists views.

Federal, state and territory leaders agreed several months ago to develop a nationally consistent post-sentence preventative detention scheme for high risk terrorist offenders.

"We will act on this swiftly if we are re-elected on July 2," Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told ABC radio.
