Copper haul stolen from Melb Age site

Thieves have made off with a haul of copper with an estimated worth of $350,000 from a Melbourne CBD demolition site that used to house the Age building.

The thieves are likely to have needed heavy haulage equipment to remove the scrap metal from a sub-station at the former Fairfax Age building, which is being demolished.

Police say the metal was taken some time between August 15 and 19 from the site, at the intersection of Lonsdale and Spencer streets, which is being levelled for a new development.

"Police believe that entry was gained by removing a ventilation louvre," according to a Victoria Police statement.

"The thieves would have needed heavy haulage equipment to remove the copper piping and sheets."
