Corby's half-brother avoids jail time

Schapelle Corby's younger half-brother, James Kisina, has escaped jail time for possessing cocaine and fleeing from police.

Schapelle Corby's half-brother has avoided jail time for possessing cocaine and fleeing from police.

James Soeli Kisina, 26, pleaded guilty to possession of a dangerous drug and obstructing police in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court, south of Brisbane, on Tuesday.

Kisina was walking to a party in Waterford, near the southern Brisbane suburb of Logan, on October 26 when he was approached by police near a service station.

He pulled out his pockets to indicate he wasn't carrying anything suspicious, but then fled.

He was caught about 100 metres away and 0.8 grams of cocaine was found in a nearby excavator tray.

At the time, Kisina was on parole after receiving a suspended sentence in February for deprivation of liberty.

He had put a 14-year-old boy suspected of robbing his neighbour's home in his car and taken him to the address, the court heard.

Kisina appeared in court via video link from the Arthur Gorrie jail.

Police prosecutor Karen Friedricks wanted the father of two jailed for three months, arguing he had been given ample opportunity to reform.

Kisina was convicted for possessing 180 grams of marijuana almost eight years ago.

Magistrate Trevor Morgan fined Kisina $750 and extended his suspended sentence for the deprivation of liberty offence for an extra nine months.

He told Kisina to grow up and warned that he ran the risk of tarnishing his young children's first memories.

"You are taking a course which will destroy your life and theirs," Mr Morgan told the court.

Kisina is expected to spend three weeks behind bars for breaching his parole, but avoided jail time for Tuesday's convictions.

Kisina was with Corby when she was caught attempting to smuggle more than 4kg of marijuana into Bali in a bodyboard bag on October 8, 2004.

Corby was sentenced to 20 years' jail in 2005, but Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last year granted her clemency on humanitarian grounds and slashed her sentence by five years.

Last month, Corby edged closer to parole after winning crucial approval from the Justice Ministry office in Bali.

The convicted drug smuggler would have to serve her parole in Bali, where she would live with her sister Mercedes and brother-in-law Wayan Widyartha.
