Coroner to probe ABF official's death

An Australian Border Force official has died on a vessel in the Torres Strait.

A coroner will investigate the death of an Australian Border Force official on a vessel in the Torres Strait.

The circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be revealed but Commissioner Michael Outram says the fatality occurred on an ABF cutter overnight on Tuesday.

"I have offered my deepest condolences to the officer's family," he said.

"My immediate concern is for the welfare of our officer's family and of the crew of the vessel.

"Ongoing welfare support is being provided to them and I have ensured that all ABF officers are offered support at this time.

"To ensure we respect the privacy of the officer's family, the ABF will not be releasing any further information regarding the officer's personal or service details."

The incident is now the subject of a coronial investigation and the ABF is working with Queensland Police and Comcare in their inquiries.
