The final six-week countdown to the opening of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital is set to begin.

Hospital officials will start to move some patients from the existing Royal Adelaide to other hospitals on Monday and will begin a process of postponing some elective surgery.

SA Ambulance chief Jason Killens says the ambulance service has a crucial role to play over the next six weeks as the move to the facility gets under way.

"We'll have additional ambulance crews on the road to handle the transfers of patients between hospitals," he said.

The new Royal Adelaide is due to open to patients in early September with the emergency department to take its first patients from September 5.
