Counting continues in close Qld seats

It's unlikely Queenslanders will have any better idea about their new parliament until late Monday afternoon.

Counting has resumed in seats still too close to call in the Queensland election, but things won't get clearer until Monday afternoon.

The new figures will be fed to the Queensland Electoral Commission from 3pm.

The latest numbers should help shore up the parliamentary composition, which remains in limbo as neither the ALP nor the LNP has secured the 45 seats needed to form government.

As such, the support of Katter's Australian Party and independent Peter Wellington may be needed to form a minority government.

The three seats that remain in tightest contention are Mansfield, Maryborough and Whitsunday.

In Mansfield, the LNP's Ian Walker is ahead by 495 votes with 76.3 per cent of the roll counted as of Sunday afternoon.

With 78.72 per cent of the roll counted in Maryborough, the ALP's Bruce Saunders also still leads the LNP's Anne Maddern by about 1200 votes.

Meanwhile, the LNP's Jason Costigan is slated to win Whitsunday with 50.17 per cent after preferences with 76.08 per cent of the roll counted.

As of 5pm Sunday, he was just 84 votes ahead of Labor's Bronwyn Taha.

Hervey Bay, Broadwater and Bundaberg were also close contests, an Electoral Commission of Queensland spokesperson said.

Statewide, some 2.2 million votes have been counted which is approximately 75 per cent of the electoral roll.
