Country rugby league player banned for hit

A country rugby league player who seriously injured an opponent in an off-the-ball hit has been deregistered.

The country rugby league player at the centre of an off-the-ball hit on an opponent has been deregistered and banned indefinitely.

Oakdale player Manu Asoava has been barred from the sport in country NSW for a hit that left Camden Rams captain Chris Browne with a sickening ankle injury.

Browne was chasing a kick down field when Asoava appeared to dive at his legs, leaving him with a compound fracture and ankle dislocation.

Asoava, who has a lengthy judiciary history in other regions, was originally suspended for 15 weeks by the Group 6 judiciary.

The decision caught the attention of NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg on Thursday, before the Country Rugby League stepped in and cancelled his registration on Friday.

"The board was appalled at this incident and has determined that Manu should be de-registered," CRL chief executive Terry Quinn said.

"If he wishes to play in a country NSW competition again he will need to apply to the CRL and give good reason why he should be registered."
