Couple killed in Melbourne home

A husband and wife have been killed in a "brutal scene" at their Melbourne home.

A dead couple has been found in a "brutal scene" inside a Melbourne home where they had lived for 40 years.

Police say workmates of the 60-year-old woman came to her Murrumbeena home on Wednesday when she didn't show up for work.

They found her body and the body of her 65-year-old husband inside the back of the home at 12.45pm (AEDT).

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McIntyre says both had been viciously assaulted with a knife, or possibly some kind of blunt weapon.

"It is quite a brutal scene," he told reporters outside the home.

"We don't know what is behind these two deaths."

Neighbours say the couple had been living there for 40 years. Nobody has reported hearing anything overnight.

It's believed their son may have been staying there but he wasn't home on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Police have spoken with him and his sister but stress there are no suspects.

There were no obvious signs of a break-in, and no evidence the deaths were a murder-suicide, police said.

Detectives have never been to the home before.

A park was searched across from the suburban home just before rain set in.
