Australia's Courtney Barnett has topped America's weekly Billboard independent album chart.

Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit debuted at number one on the independent albums chart, while it sits at number 20 on the general Billboard 200 albums list. The record debuted at number four on the ARIA albums chart last month.

Barnett, who is from Melbourne, recently scooped an award at the South By Southwest Festival in Texas and was compared to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain by Entertainment Weekly.

She performed her song Depreston on the Ellen show in the US and host Ellen DeGeneres said Barnett was one of her favourite artists.

Barnett is currently performing in the UK and kicks off an Australian tour in Hobart on April 24.
