Two cousins, who along with rugby league player Jamil Hopoate, viciously attacked two men outside a Sydney pub will spend more than a year behind bars.

Luke and John Akauola and Hopoate had been at the Ivanhoe Hotel in Manly in February 2014 for a friend's birthday when they were kicked out after an altercation.

In a laneway at the back of the hotel, the trio were later involved in a "cowardly and vicious" assault on Alexander Christie.

The Downing Centre District Court heard on Monday Mr Christie was punched and kicked, including while he lay unconscious on the ground.

After breaking free from a security guard's grip, Luke also stomped on his head.

When Mr Christie's friend, Timothy Blackett, tried to help him, he was also assaulted.

Judge Anthony Garling said Luke Akauola's actions in the attack were more serious while Hopoate had a lower level of involvement.

"The victims did nothing to provoke what happened," he said.

John Akauola claimed he entered the melee because his cousin was being attacked.

Both men were charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mr Garling sentenced John Akauola to a minimum of 16 months in jail while Luke Akauola was sentenced to at least 21 months behind bars.

Family members yelled out "love you brother" as the cousins were led out of court on Monday.

Hopoate was sentenced last year to a maximum of 18 months for the attack on Mr Christie and a two-year good behaviour bond over the assault on Mr Blackett.
