Cousins sends lawyer to WA court for him

Ben Cousins has sent his lawyer to represent him in a WA court on new drug charges.

The lawyer for fallen AFL footballer Ben Cousins has indicated to a West Australian court that he will seek to have new drug charges against his client dropped.

Police allegedly found Cousins with a trace amount of a prohibited drug, believed to be methylamphetamine, when they searched his car during a traffic stop last October.

He was charged by summons last month with possessing a prohibited drug but left his lawyer, Michael Tudori, to appear on his behalf in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Mr Tudori indicated he would seek to have the charges dropped and the case was remanded until February 25.

Following a string of off-field incidents and substance abuse problems, the Brownlow medallist and West Coast Eagles premiership player fell from grace.

The father-of-two was suspended for 12 months by the AFL in 2007 for bringing the game into disrepute before making a comeback with Richmond. He retired in 2010.

Cousins' drug addiction has been marked by several relapses and stints in rehabilitation centres, as well as public apologies.
