The mother of murdered schoolboy Daniel Morcombe has reacted angrily after not being advised that her son's convicted killer applied for a High Court appeal.

Lawyers for Brett Peter Cowan on Thursday lodged an application for special leave to appeal his conviction in the High Court.

Cowan was last year sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty in the Queensland Supreme Court of abducting, raping and murdering the Sunshine Coast schoolboy, 13, in 2003.

The 45-year-old failed to have the conviction overturned in the Queensland Court of Appeal last month after his lawyers appealed on six grounds, including potential prejudicial media during the trial and police improperly obtaining a confession.

Daniel Morcombe's mother, Denise, said the latest move to appeal was no surprise but she tweeted her anger at being made aware through the media.

"Cowan appeals to High Court. Not surprised. BUT only found this out on the TV news. Why is the family of Daniel not advised? Don't we count?" she posted on Twitter.

Cowan's lawyer Tim Meehan indicated his client would likely file a special leave application to the High Court after his appeal was dismissed last month.
