Cracked Opal Tower damage 'could take weeks to fix'

The developer of Sydney's cracked Opal Tower says it could take several weeks before units are restored to their original condition.

Residents of Sydney's cracked Opal Tower could be forced to stay in hotels for a number of weeks while builders try to fix damaged units.

The newly-built tower in Sydney Olympic Park was evacuated on Christmas Eve after cracks found in the building sparked fears it would collapse.

Developer Ecove on Wednesday said it has asked for an explanation from builders Icon about the cause and remediation work, pending the release of a government report into the issue.

"We believe Icon to be a capable builder; however, we want to know, like everyone else, what has happened at Opal Tower," director Bassam Aflak said in a statement.

The developers believe there are a number of apartments that require remediation work to return them to their original condition.

"We have been advised this may take a number of weeks and Icon will provide alternative accommodation options for those residents for the duration of the work. We're still waiting on details from Icon on who is affected," Mr Aflak said.
He apologised for the ongoing disruption and has set up a hotline for affected residents to call.

"Our focus continues to be ensuring the Opal Tower residents are getting all the care and support that can be provided."
