Craft brewer nearly doubles profit

Gage Roads Brewing has made a half year profit of more than $1 million due to strong growth in sales and production of its craft beer.

Craft beer company Gage Roads Brewing has almost doubled its half year profit after hitting full production and achieving record monthly sales.

The maker of Atomic Pale Ale and Sleeping Giant Indian Pale Ale made a profit of $1.02 million in the six months to December 31, up from $513,000 a year earlier.

Gage Roads sold more than 7.6 million litres of beer in the period, up 42 per cent from a year earlier, enjoying record sales in November (equivalent of 250,000 cartons) and December (200,000 cartons).

It also operated at full capacity during November and December, and expects to upgrade or replace some of its packaging equipment over the next two years to meet its target of being able to produce the equivalent of three million cartons annually by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.

The company's major shareholder is Woolworths.
