Crane collapse threat eases in Melbourne

Favourable weather has helped emergency crews in Melbourne dismantle the parts of a crane which had threatened nearby homes amid wild winds.

Still weather has allowed engineers to make good progress dismantling a 40-metre crane teetering over Melbourne properties, while a major arterial road has reopened.

The crane's precariously-hanging jib and A-frame have been removed and Bridge Road is again open to traffic.

As long as weather stays favourable, Worksafe says its crews will tomorrow continue removing the remainder of the crane tower and the mobile cranes brought in to assist with the disassembly.

Richmond residents forced to leave their homes two days ago amid fears of the machine collapsing were expected to return home Wednesday evening, police told AAP.

They had been forced to evacuate on Monday night and were taken to an emergency centre at Richmond Town Hall.

While some were allowed back into properties on Tuesday, others living within 100sq m of the site had to spend a second night away from home.

Two smaller cranes are at the Lennox Street site for the salvage operation after the larger structure was damaged in strong winds on Monday night.

Lennox Street remains closed to traffic.

State Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said there will be an investigation once the crane is removed.

"As soon as that is done in a safe manner when the weather permits, then there will be a WorkSafe investigation," he said on Wednesday.

WorkSafe hasn't ruled out laying charges over the incident, sparked by the crane's arm bending backwards, scattering broken pieces.

Michael Clark from Clark Cranes, which owns the structure, said on Tuesday it appeared the arm wasn't left in a position which would have allowed it to move freely in windy conditions.
