Newly crowned Moto3 world champion Brad Binder has won a shortened grand prix at Phillip Island that was marred by a four-bike crash.

Brit John McPhee (Peugeot MC Saxoprint) was taken from the circuit in an ambulance after he was involved the incident that stopped the 23-lap race with 18 laps to go.

McPhee lost control of his bike in a tightly-packed field coming down Lukey Heights and was struck by one of the three bikes that became involved.

He was reported to have regained consciousness before he was taken to hospital.

Just 24 of the 34 riders on the original starting grid rejoined the race, which was reduced to 10 laps, when it was restarted after a 20-minute break.

Three other incidents caused multiple retirements in the opening four laps.

Binder (Red Bull KTM) started the race on pole position and was quickly able to establish a healthy lead to score his sixth win of the season.

Andrea Locatelli (Leopard Racing) was second and Aron Canet (Marc VDS Hondaa) was third.
