Crazy summer surge for Tye and Curran

Australia will be aiming to bounce back from their ODI flops when they take on England and NZ in a T20 tri-series.

They've both enjoyed meteoric rises this summer, and now Australian paceman Andrew Tye and his England counterpart Tom Curran will have the chance to strut their stuff on the T20 stage.

Curran initially thought his main contribution in Australia this summer would be in the BBL after signing with the Hobart Hurricanes.

But his schedule was transformed after he was called into England's Ashes squad as a replacement for injured paceman Steven Finn in November.

The 22-year-old went on to play two Tests, but it was his performance in Sunday's ODI win over Australia that showcased his true potential.

Curran snared figures of 5-35 to lead England to a shock 12-run victory in Perth, with the performance confirming his status as a rising star.

Tye made his T20 debut for Australia two years ago, but his stature has sky rocketed even more in recent months.

So much in fact that he was snapped up for $1.4 million by Kings XI Punjab in the IPL auction.

On the same day, Tye snared career-best figures of 5-46 against England.

Tye and Curran can no longer sneak under the radar, and their progress will be put to the test in the upcoming T20 tri-series, which also involves New Zealand.

"It's been crazy to be honest," Curran said of his rapid rise.

"I had most of October off. I was going to start training and preparing for the 21st of December when the Big Bash started.

"I hadn't really started training yet, and then got a call to come as a replacement for the Ashes.

"I sat on the side for a couple of months, then got my go in the last two Tests.

"It didn't really go as well as I would have liked (in that format), but it's been an unbelievable couple of months."

NZ unveiled their T20 squad on Monday.

The powerful squad includes the world's top T20 international batsman - Colin Munro - as well as the world's top-ranked T20 bowler - Ish Sodhi.

Australia will be aiming to regain some pride through the T20 format after losing their ODI series against England 4-1.

But they'll have to do so with a weakened squad.

The upcoming tour of South Africa means most of the team's Test stars will miss the T20 series, with only David Warner given the green light to play.

Australia start the series against NZ in Sydney on Saturday.
