The warm and windy weather predicted for Tuesday is expected to keep hundreds of NSW firefighters busy as 20 fires continue to burn out of control.

More than 700 firefighters battled blazes on Monday across the state with the largest at Lone Pine near Port Stephens, Cessnock and Kempsey.

The Lone Pine fire burned through more than 6500 hectares and residents of Limeburners Creek, Karuah, Swan Bay and Nine Mile Creek are urged to stay alert.

There were fears the fires could worsen in hot, windy conditions forecast for Monday but concerns eased as the weather stayed mild.

RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has pleaded with the public to stop taking selfies in front of the flames after a video of a man surrounded by fire went viral.

"Use some common sense," he said.

"If you come across a fire think about survival, not selfies."

Two fires near Kempsey were graded as "under control" and "being controlled" by Monday afternoon.

The Pacific Highway was closed on Monday morning near South Kempsey because of fire, but has since reopened.

Fire crews continue to patrol a fire in the southern suburbs of Cessnock, in the Hunter region.

The blaze had threatened homes in Kitchener and Abernethy on Sunday.

"Very high" fire danger warnings remain in place for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Far North Coast and southern Riverina regions.
