Crime figure Alex released on bail

George Alex will spend the next five days in a mental health facility as part of strict bail conditions granted at a Sydney court.

Sydney crime figure George Alex will spend the next five days in a mental health facility as part of strict bail conditions.

The 43-year-old was arrested at a hotel in Sydney's city centre on Thursday and charged with making threats to a number of people from April to September.

Dressed in a black hoodie, Alex appeared at Central Local Court on Friday, where his lawyer David Dalton offered a surety of $50,000 cash. Other conditions included surrendering his passport until his next court appearance in October.

Mr Dalton applied for bail on the grounds Alex be admitted to a medical facility for psychiatric assessment for at least five days.

Magistrate Les Mabbutt said Alex must remain at the facility until he is released by a certified psychiatrist.

When released, Alex must not enter several locations, including the Blacktown Local Area Command, the Sydney Aquarium, a residence on Sussex Street and St Leonards train station.

He must also report to the Earlwood police station.
