Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland says the criticism of retiring Test captain Michael Clarke has been unfair.

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland says the recent criticism of retiring Australian Test captain Michael Clarke is regrettable.

Clarke will step down after the fifth Ashes Test in England which starts on Thursday.

Asked about the unfavourable comments regarding Clarke, including some from former Australian teammates, Sutherland told reporters in Canberra on Thursday: "I think it's been unfair and inappropriate".
