Discussion over the federal government proposal to revoke citizenship for dual nationals has centred on so-called foreign fighters, people suspected of travelling to conflict destinations proscribed under Australian law.
But, as outlined in the citizenship discussion paper, the discretionary powers the Abbott government intends to grant to the Immigration Minister would also extend to some Australians who do not leave the country.
And with the legislation due before parliament in the coming weeks, and Labor's expression of "in principle" support, questions remain about the substance of the government's proposal, and the process under which it's being shaped.
The latest criticism, and some of the more scathing so far, is flowing from within Prime Minister Abbott's own Liberal ranks.
