A man accused of killing another man at a Crown Casino complex hotel has been remanded in custody after requesting not to face court.

Elias Herodotou, 28, from Hadfield, instructed a lawyer to appear on his behalf in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday where he was due to face a murder charge.

Herodotou is accused of murdering Darren John Webb, a 40-year-old Thornbury man, who was found with a neck wound inside a room on the eighth floor of the Crown Metropol hotel early on Sunday.

Herodotou's lawyer Danielle Svede confirmed he had asked not to be brought into court for the brief remand hearing where there was no application for bail.

She said there were several custody management issues, including a spinal injury and depression.

"He also may be withdrawing from substances including ice," Ms Svede said.

Magistrate Alan Spillane remanded Herodotou in custody until a filing hearing on July 16.
