Crows must fix footy department: Ricciuto

Adelaide board member and club icon Mark Ricciuto says a new coach is one of a 'few key appointments' the AFL club needs to make soon.

Mark Ricciuto says Adelaide must focus on fixing up their football department in addition to finding a new coach.

Ricciuto was one of the central figures in Brenton Sanderson's shock sacking last week.

"It's not just about (finding) the head coach," the Crows' board member and club legend told Fox Sports on Monday.

"Obviously they're the most important, but you need a full football department and we've been under-resourced."

Ricciuto suggested his focus in the next few weeks would be making not one but a "few key appointments".

The 2003 Brownlow Medallist added those signings would be the key to keeping out-of-contract star trio Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane and Taylor Walker at Adelaide.

"Trading any of those players is not on our radar at the moment, at all," he said.

"We want them to stay at the footy club and we believe all three will stay.

"We'll get everything back on track and then we believe we can sign all those players in the not-so-distant future."

Ricciuto maintained Sanderson's axing was the "right decision" for the club.

The 39-year-old said the Crows will talk to a number of candidates and were not fussed with the fact Simon Goodwin signed up to be Paul Roos' successor at Melbourne.

"We certainly didn't move Brenton on because we thought we were going to lose the chance to get Simon Goodwin," Ricciuto said.

"He's untried.

"The fact he's gone to Melbourne and still wants to do it (be an assistant coach) for a couple of years under Paul Roos, it tells me he doesn't think he was ready to do it (become a head coach now)."
