Crows sweat on star onballer Thompson

Adelaide have selected Scott Thompson for Saturday's AFL clash against West Coast but admit lingering concern over the midfielder's hamstring injury.

Adelaide's dual club champion Scott Thompson will face weekly health check-ups for the remainder of the AFL season as he battles a hamstring complaint.

Thompson has been recalled for Saturday's home clash against West Coast, with Adelaide's star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield also cleared of a knee injury and set to play.

Thompson missed last Sunday's win against Collingwood, which ended the durable onballer's sequence of 99 consecutive AFL games.

Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says Thompson's hamstring ailment is a lingering concern because it's not a traditional strain.

"Scotty Thompson was a challenging one because it wasn't your typical hamstring injury, it's more of a neural-referred pain, it's a back-related tightness," Sanderson told reporters on Friday.

"You just don't know, if he gets a hit early or late in the game with fatigue, it's hard to pick up with those neural-type injuries.

"It's a tricky one to manage. Where normally you miss three weeks and you're back at full speed again, we have to just ensure, particularly with his experience and his age, that we just keep monitoring him.

"Each week we'll probably just have to have a chat about where he's at and how he's feeling. Hopefully it just keeps improving."

Thompson's recall prompted Sanderson to drop forward Tom Lynch for "scratchy" recent form as the Crows seek to cement their spot in the top eight.

Adelaide clawed their way into eighth spot with last week's win and next meet an 11th-placed Eagles outfit again unsettled by injuries.

West Coast were unable to select ruckman Dean Cox, who was knocked out by Richmond's Ty Vickery last week in an act which resulted in the Tiger tall being suspended four matches.

The Eagles also lost Brad Sheppard (ankle) for their trip to Adelaide while Ashley Smith and Simon Tunbridge were omitted, with tapman Scott Lycett, Jamie Bennell, Josh Hill, Jamie Cripps all recalled.
