Crusaders announce 10 players to stay

Ten players have committed their future to the Crusaders and New Zealand Rugby for at least one more year.

The Crusaders have announced the signing of several key players to stiffen their Super Rugby squad for next year and beyond.

The pending departure of several Crusaders veterans, including Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Colin Slade will force the seven-time champions to rebuild - a process which took a major stride on Thursday with the announcement of 10 players to return next year.

All Blacks midfielder Ryan Crotty leads the way, committing for two more seasons through to the end of 2017.

Staying on for another year is powerful but injury-prone midfielder Robbie Freuan, along with utility back David Havili, five-eighth Richie Mo'unga, halfbacks Andy Ellis and Mitchell Drummond, loose forward Jed Brown, lock Scott Barrett, prop Tim Perry and hooker Codie Taylor.

The Crusaders are reportedly keen to sign Waratahs squad member Ben Volavola, but Thursday's announcement didn't include any news regarding the utility back's status.

Veteran prop Wyatt Crockett extended his contract by three years earlier this week while other notable players already contracted to 2017 were the senior All Blacks foursome of fullback Israel Dagg, No.8 Kieran Read, lock Sam Whitelock and prop Owen Franks.
