CSR chairman John Gillam says the building products supplier is demonstrating its confidence in Australia's construction industry through its capital expenditure program.

CSR offloaded its troublesome Viridian glass business for $222 million in January and is ploughing cash into projects including a new $75 million Hebel plant on the NSW central coast.

"Our belief in the strong future prospects for the building products sector can be evidenced in the investments we have made in both innovative product solutions and growth-linked capex this year," Mr Gillam told the firm's annual general meeting on Wednesday.

Outgoing chief executive Rob Sindel, who hands over to Julie Coates in September, indicated the coalition's surprise federal election victory was among several favourable developments for CSR.

"Recent reductions in interest rates, improving credit availability, stable tax policies and first home owner support have boosted hopes for an improvement in consumer confidence and demand for housing," he said.

"Having said that, the timing of any positive impact is always difficult to predict."

At 1425 AEST, CSR shares were 4.0 cents, or 1.0 per cent, lower at $4.01.
