Cuba cracks down on private cinemas

The Cuban government has ordered all privately run cinemas and video game salons to be shut down.

The Cuban government is ordering the immediate closure of privately run cinemas and video game salons that have mushroomed on the island in recent months.

The businesses have been operating in a legal grey area using independent restaurant licences.

They offer basic food and drink, though the entertainment is the main draw.

There are around 200 areas of private enterprise that are legal on the island under President Raul Castro's economic changes.

An announcement in Communist Party newspaper Granma on Saturday said explicitly that the movie and video salons were not allowed.

It said that showing films and playing computer games in private businesses must "cease immediately".
