Cycling race moves from city to Torquay

After three years at the Albert Park Formula One circuit, the opening event of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race program will move to Torquay.

The circuit race that starts the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race program will move from the Albert Park Formula One track to Torquay.

The Towards Zero Race Torquay will still have a circuit course and will be held on Thursday, January 30.

Then comes the women's Great Ocean Road Race on the Saturday and the men's race on the Sunday, as in previous years.

Race Melbourne never gained strong traction, with low crowds over its three editions.

This year's event was hit by the temperature soaring into the 40s.

It has always struggled in comparison to the Down Under Classic, the hugely-popular circuit race that starts Adelaide's Tour Down Under week.

Moving Race Melbourne to Torquay means all the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race events are in the Surf Coast area.

The two main races on the Saturday and Sunday start and finish in Geelong.
