Cyclist Boeckmans wakes from induced coma

Belgian cyclist Kris Boeckmans has talked with family and doctors after being woken from an induced coma, two weeks after a crash in the Vuelta in Spain.

Belgian cyclist Kris Boeckmans has been woken from an induced coma and is recovering well from injuries sustained a fortnight ago in a crash during the Vuelta, his team Lotto Soudal said late on Thursday.

"Lotto Soudal is very happy to announce that Kris Boeckmans is no longer kept in an induced coma and that the recovery is evolving positively," the team said, adding he had been able "to talk with his family and the doctors".

Boeckmans suffered injuries to his lung and face and broke ribs in a mass crash during the eighth stage of the race in Spain. He was taken to hospital in Murcia and put into an induced coma.

Lotto Soudal said doctors had discovered no hidden injuries but he would remain in intensive care for further observation before being repatriated with a medical flight to continue his recovery in a Belgian hospital.
