Australian cycling star Simon Gerrans has suffered an elbow fracture in his first race back from a broken collar bone.

Making his first start of the year, Gerrans suffered the latest setback when he crashed in Saturday's wild and wind-buffeted Strade Bianche race in Italy.

He posted a photo of his x-ray on Instagram with the caption: "That would be why my elbow hurts! Little fracture of the radial head. Couple weeks on the ergo ahead of me now. What doesn't kill makes you stronger."

Arguably Australia's finest current cyclist since Cadel Evans's retirement, 34-year-old Gerrans was preparing for next month's big one-day classic races, having broken through with victory in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege in Belgium last year.

It continues an awful start to the season for Gerrans, who boasts stage wins on all three grand tours, the Tour De France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana.

He broke his collar bone in a training accident on a mountain bike late last year, preventing him from pursuing a record fourth Tour Down Under title.
