Dad and 5-year-old daughter drown off SA

The bodies of a father and his five-year-old daughter who drowned off the coast of South Australia have been recovered.

The bodies of a father and his five-year-old daughter have been recovered off South Australia's Eyre Peninsula after they were swept off rocks by a large wave.

The Holden Hill man, 35, and his daughter were swept into the sea near Whaler's Way Sanctuary on Sunday afternoon.

The child's body was recovered on Sunday and her father's body was pulled from the water on Monday.

Police said they were among a group of people standing close to the ocean's edge on what they described as a "very treacherous piece of coast".

"It's open directly to the Southern Ocean," Superintendent Paul Bahr told reporters at the scene.

"Even though you have very nice, benign day on land, the Southern Ocean does have a deadly swell. Freak waves are not uncommon.

"Your chances of survival in the water are very slim."

Signs have also been placed along the coast warning of the dangers.

Police will prepare a report for the state coroner.
