A Melbourne man is devastated after his father's ashes were stolen from his house along with a century-old vase worth $25,000.
Police say offenders broke into the Brunswick East house last week stealing a vase containing the ashes and a $25,000 one-off George Owen Worcester Potpourri Vase made in 1890.
The 57-year-old victim is devastated by the loss of his father's ashes, police say, and they are hoping the thieves will have a change of heart and return them.
"It's difficult enough to lose a parent but to have their ashes stolen is just heartless," Detective Senior Constable Jamie Cunningham said in a statement.
The thieves didn't take the lid of the 1890 vase, which significantly reduces its value.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity around Alsace Street in Brunswick East between May 9 and 11 to contact Crime Stoppers.
