All Blacks great Dan Carter has lost a valuable sponsorship deal after being charged with drink-driving in Paris last week.

Carter, who plays for French rugby club Racing 92, was pulled over by police near the Champs-Elysees and charged after testing at twice the legal limit.

The 34-year-old five-eighth confirmed the latest development in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"Over the last few days my management and I have had to front up to my sponsors," he said.

"Not surprisingly, Land Rover, who for good reason have zero tolerance towards drink driving, have ended their relationship with me.

"I understand this completely and am disappointed I put them in this position."

Police say Carter had a alcohol level of .98g/l, above the authorised limit of .5g/l.

He was stopped by police at a checkpoint where he was caught over the limit, speeding and not carrying a driver's licence.

The World Cup winner has since returned to New Zealand for a holiday, and concedes he made a "a massive error of judgment".

"Just got back to NZ for what was supposed to be a fun pre planned holiday. Seeing the family again puts fresh perspective on just how big a mistake I made," he said in another post

Carter shifted to France following the 2015 World Cup, at which he played a starring role in the All Blacks' win over the Wallabies in the final, ending his record-breaking career at 112 Tests.

He holds the record for the most points in Tests with 1598.
