Darwin hospital working over capacity

Elective surgery has been cancelled at the Royal Darwin Hospital as it continues to operate over capacity.

The Royal Darwin Hospital is operating over capacity prompting health officials to cancel some surgery and bring in extra staff.

Locals were urged to consider seeing their doctor for treatment for non-urgent issues instead of presenting at the hospital's casualty or emergency departments.

Director of Medical Services Alison Maclean said plans in place to manage the demand were working and had reduced the use of overflow spaces.

"The hospital remains over capacity but plans to manage the demand are having the intended effect," she said.

However, the hospital opted to cancel all non-urgent elective surgery planned for this week and had brought in nursing staff from other areas of the health service.

"We appreciate this is a challenging time for the hospital and our patients and we again thank the community for their patience and understanding," Dr Maclean said.

"We are doing our very best to make sure we can provide safe, patient-centred, care at all times."
