Indonesia is less than two months out from a presidential election, and it's an election the Australian government will be watching closely under the circumstances.

Revelations of spying on the Indonesian president and his inner circle, the Abbott government turning back asylum-seeker boats and the navy's incursion into Indonesian waters have led to troubled relations between the two countries recently.

SBS's Mark Davis had a rare sit-down with Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa to discuss the relationship between Australia and its important neighbour.

Mark Davis tells Ron Sutton what he learned, starting with Mr Natalegawa's take on Australia's turn-back-the-boats policy.
