David Goffin advances in ATP European Open

David Goffin has made a winning start in his home country, beating Frances Tiafoe to kick-start his European Open bid in Antwerp.

David Goffin got off to a winning start in his home country as he beat Frances Tiafoe in the second round of the European Open in Antwerp.

Top seed Goffin fought his way through a tie-break in the first set before prevailing 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 against the 19-year-old American wildcard.

The Belgian will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals after the Greek qualifier beat Ivo Karlovic.

Karlovic trailed 7-6 (7-4) 5-6 when he was forced to retire with an ankle problem.

Second seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga is also safely through to the last eight after beating fellow Frenchman Kenny de Schepper 6-4 6-3 while Diego Schwartzman, seeded fourth, also came through in straight sets against Ernesto Escobedo.
