Newly-appointed Fremantle Dockers captain David Mundy has already hinted at Nat Fyfe becoming his successor, but says he is happy to remain in the role for as long as he can.

A player vote resulted with Mundy, 30, on Friday being named as the eighth captain of the Dockers, replacing Matthew Pavlich.

Pavlich, 34, stepped down on Wednesday after nine years in the role.

While reigning Brownlow medallist Fyfe was widely tipped to lead the club into 2016, Mundy was given the nod, based on a 5-4-3-2-1 voting basis.

Obviously (Nat's) name was thrown up and he's been elected into the leadership group for the second year in a row, which is a massive pat on the back for him," Mundy said.

"We have seen some great growth from Nat, obviously as a player, but what you might not see behind closed doors is he has really stepped up in that role as well.

"He only has more improvement in him and he is a fantastic leader as it is."

Pavlich remains in the leadership group, which welcomes defender Michael Johnson, who joins Lee Spurr and Aaron Sandilands.

Mundy, 30, was acquired by the Dockers with pick No. 19 of the 2003 National Draft and has played 233 of a possible 251 games for the club since debuting in round 6, 2005.

The 2010 Doig medallist is contracted to the club for a further two seasons, but admits to not seeing the end of his career just yet.

"(I'd like to captain) for as long as the players deem me worthy," he said.

"I have only had one major injury scare otherwise I've been really resilient. I dont see myself giving up this caper in the near future.

"And as long as I keep displaying the values and the players value what I am providing, I am happy to be their captain."
